PSA is a physical absorption process. It possesses two unique characteristics. The first characteristic is that an absorbent has different adsorption capacity to different component. This can realize selective absorption of absorbents to impurities, resulting in purifying hydrogen gas. The second characteristic that the adsorption capacity increases with pressure, and decreases with temperature. Therefore, the absorption can be performed under high pressure and low temperature condition, while the regeneration under low pressure and high temperature condition. Each absorbent column will be operated continuously in the mode of absorption, regeneration, then absorption again, and so on. At any given time, some columns will be operated in absorption mode, and some in regeneration mode. This will realize a continuous operation of gas separation/purification.

For industrial application of PSA-H2 and/or TSA, solid absorbents with larger surface areas are used. They are activated aluminum oxide, activated carbon, silicon, and mol sieves. Different absorbent has different affiliation to different components.

The adsorption/separation of gas mixture is taking place in a fixed bed column. The column is packed with multiple absorbents. The treated gas mixture contains various components such as H2, CH4, C2H4, C3H8, C4H10, C5H12, CO, CO2, N2, etc. It flows into the column at a given pressure. Because the absorbents have different adsorption capacities to those components, each component will be enriched in a particular area of the column. Since the absorbents have highest adsorption capacity to heavy components such as CH4, C2H4, C3H8, C4H10, C5H12, CO, CO2, N2, etc, is enriched near the entry of the column. While the absorbents have the lowest adsorption capacity to H2, H2 is enriched near the exit of the column. Other components are enriched in the certain areas of the column based on their individual adsorption capacity. 

Using our modern PSA technology, with multiple columns in parallel configuration and automatic and programmable control system, high purity H2 can be obtained.

We have built over 60 hydrogen purification units by PSA, with capacity as low as 50 NM3/Hr, and as high as 10,000 NM3/Hr, and many other PSA applications. Our rich experience in PSA applications have enabled us to complete the world largest ethanol dehydration unit of 400,000 TPY.
